The Glorious Gospel: Quotes on Christ’s Work
Hello, my friends! As we approach Easter or Resurrection Sunday, it’s the perfect time to meditate on the glorious truths of the Gospel. 1 Corinthians 15:3 defines the Gospel as the “death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.” We know that it is only His work that can save us, not anything we’ve done. Today, I’d like to share some Scripture and favorite quotes about Christ’s saving work.
“Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all (Isaiah 53:4-6).”
Yea, Thou wilt answer for me, righteous Lord! Thine all the sorrow, mine the great reward: Thine the sharp thorns, and mine the golden crown; Mine the life won, and Thine the life laid down. ~Anonymous
Now, poor trembling seeker, what sayest thou to this? Canst thou not now rest on Christ? God is satisfied with His Son’s atoning sacrifice; canst thou be dissatisfied with it? God thinks Jesus enough; canst thou think Him too little?… Salvation consists in simply casting thyself down on Christ. Cast thyself down on thy very face in the dust before Him, and once for all have done with thine own wretched self. Rely not on anything thou canst do, think, say or know; rest alone on Jesus only, and thou art saved! Be thou who thou mayest and what thou mayest—though thou wert the very worst sinner out of hell, be thy soul the blackest yet—if thou wilt trust in Christ Who “hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust,” thou shalt be saved.—Charles Spurgeon
A Christian’s life consisteth of three points—of faith, love, and the cross.—Martin Luther, Selections from the Table Talk of Martin Luther
“But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world (Galatians 6:14).”
Here is love, vast as the ocean, Lovingkindness as a flood, As the Prince of Life a ransom, Sheds for us His precious blood. Who His love will not remember, Who can cease to sing His praise, It can never be forgotten, Throughout heaven's eternal days! ~William Rees
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23).”
A young man who was troubled by a grievous sin came to [Horatio] Bonar for help. The latter told him that God was willing to forgive, and that the blood of Jesus His Son cleanseth from all sin. The despairing young man seemed unable to believe the gospel message, however, and continually reminded Bonar of the greatness of his transgression. Finally an inspiration came to the pastor. “Tell me,” he demanded, “which is of greater weight in the eyes of God—your sin, black as it is, or the blood of Jesus, shed for sinners?” Light dawned on the soul of the troubled young man, and he cried joyfully, “Oh, I am sure the blood of Jesus weighs more heavily than even my sin!” And so he found peace.—Ernest Edwin Ryden, The Story of Our Hymns
So may a believer say to the law, and to the justice of God, If I owe you anything, go to my Christ, Who has undertaken for me. I must not sit down discouraged, under the apprehension of those debts, which Christ, to the utmost farthing, has fully satisfied.—Thomas Brooks, Precious Remedies Against Satan’s Devices
“And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation (Hebrews 9:27-28).”
What then? Need we the help of men? How is Christ a perfect Savior if any act of our redemption is left to the performance of saint or angel? No, our souls must die if the blood of Jesus cannot save them. And whatsoever witty error may dispute for the merits of saints, the distressed conscience cries, “Christ, and none but Christ!…Christ, and Christ alone; Jesus, and only Jesus; mercy, mercy, pardon, comfort, for our Savior’s sake!”—Thomas Adams
Jesus died on the cross to save sinners, and whoever Jesus makes free is truly free. When the devil shows us our sins, it is only to make us desperate. “That is what you are like,” he says, “and that is how you will be the rest of your life.” But when the Holy Spirit shows us our sins, it is always in the light of the completed work on the cross where Jesus died for you and for me. He did not only die for us. He lives! And He is with us, now and forever.—Corrie ten Boom, I Stand at the Door and Knock: Meditations by the Author of the Hiding Place
